چکیده

Using the Effelsberg radio telescope at 4.85 GHz and 8.35 GHz we discovered large symmetric lobes of polarized radio emission around the strongly Hi deficient Virgo cluster spiral galaxy NGC4569. These lobes extend up to 24 kpc from the galactic disk. Our observations were complemented by 1.4 GHz continuum emission from existing Hi observations. This is the first time that such huge radio continuum lobes are observed in a cluster spiral galaxy. The eastern lobe seems detached and has a flat spectrum typical for in-situ cosmic ray electron acceleration. The western lobe is diffuse and possesses vertical magnetic fields over its whole volume. The lobes are not powered by an AGN, but probably by a nuclear starburst producing ≥ 10 supernovae which occurred ∼ 30 Myr ago. Since the radio lobes are symmetric, they resist ram pressure due to the galaxy’s rapid motion within the intracluster medium.

New CO observations and simulations of the NGC 4438 / NGC 4435 system ⋆ Interaction diagnostics of the Virgo cluster galaxy NGC 4438

NGC 4438 is a highly perturbed spiral with a stellar tidal tail and extraplanar molecular gas, now very HI deficient, crossing the center of the Virgo cluster at high speed. Various authors have attributed the perturbed appearance to the ram pressure of the intracluster medium, the tidal interaction with NGC 4435, and an ISM-ISM collision between the ISM of NGC 4438 and NGC 4435. We present new...

Galactic Dynamos and Galactic Winds

Spiral galaxies host dynamically important magnetic fields which can affect gas flows in the disks and halos. Total magnetic fields in spiral galaxies are strongest (up to 30 μG) in the spiral arms where they are mostly turbulent or tangled. Polarized synchrotron emission shows that the resolved regular fields are generally strongest in the interarm regions (up to 15 μG). Faraday rotation measu...

Ram-Ppressure Effects on Dense Molecular Arms in the Central Regions of Spiral Galaxies by Intracluster Medium

We investigated ram-pressure effects by an intracluster wind on an inner disk of spiral galaxies by a hydrodynamical simulation. Even if the wind is mild and not strong enough to strip the gas disk, the ram pressure disturbs orbits of the inter-arm gas significantly. This results in asymmetric dense molecular arms in the inner few kpc region of a galaxy. This mechanism would explain the asymmet...

Ram pressure effects in the galactic plane and galactic dynamos in the no-z approximation

Context. The magnetic field of galaxies is believed to be produced by internal dynamo action, but can be affected by motion of the galaxy through the surrounding medium. Observations of polarized radio emission of galaxies located in galaxy clusters have revealed noticeable features of large-scale magnetic configurations, including displacements of the magnetic structures from the optical image...

Cluster Magnetic Fields from Galactic Outflows

We performed cosmological, magneto-hydrodynamical simulations to follow the evolution of magnetic fields in galaxy clusters, exploring the possibility that the origin of the magnetic seed fields are galactic outflows during the star-burst phase of galactic evolution. To do this we coupled a semi-analytical model for magnetized galactic winds as suggested by Bertone et al. (2006) to our cosmolog...
